First nations fiercely opposed to Northern Gateway

Vancouver Sun

The Gitga’at First Nation has been saying no to the Northern Gateway pipeline project since 2006.

The project will bring more than 200 huge tankers annually through the waters next to their tiny community of 160 in Hartley Bay at the entrance to Douglas Channel on B.C.’s northwest coast. Another 500 Gitga’at live elsewhere, including in Prince Rupert, also on the northwest coast.

The risks and effect of an oil spill are simply not worth any economic benefits, which the first nation views as nil, says Marvin Robinson, a spokesman for the community.

Acknowledging that the ruling class in this country is white is something that I’m fine with. Acknowledging the disastrous effects of imperialism, cultural elitism, imposition of Christianity, capitalism etc. and acknowledging that these were for the most part perpetrated by white Americans is fine. But it is not my intention to get mired down in squabbling over race moving forward. Its an unnecessary distraction from building our tribes and defeating the empire. I don’t view this as a struggle against the white race, rather against the global empire, which exploits or ignores race issues as it is convenient to further their own ends. They’d rather we spend our energy hating the white race rather than systematically dismantling their empire by building our tribes’ capacity to take care of ourselves.

Another thing: we are out numbered and out gunned. I don’t think most sane people want a continent wide race war. Our survival likely depends on strategic alliances with other racial groups, black, white and brown on both the left and right; other entities with grievances against the empire.

An example of such a strategic alliance in BC/SE AK would be between white commercial and sports fishermen and Native commercial and subsistence fishermen to prevent mining and oil companies from polluting or destroying spawning grounds. You could take such an alliance even further by using it to start blocking large, corporate out of state fishing operators from coming into the region to poach our resources. From there you can start talking about how the people who live in the region can self manage and regulate fisheries without “help” from state and federal authorities. Perhaps somewhere in there you could negotiate the terms on which minerals and oil are extracted so that they don’t conflict with salmon runs. This would be but one path toward territorial sovereignty. The tactics used in such a movement would be numerous, everything from our own political wheeling and dealing to direct action campaigns. As it is, the decision making process for these things is out of the hands of locals, white and Native alike.
